Cindi’s Adventures with Etchall

Etchall® Etching Cream is an amazing product with a long history of use on glass, mirrors, and ceramic glazes.  It's easy to use, and the product is re-usable so there is very little waste.   Be sure to visit http://www.Etchall.com to learn more about their variety of products, for a project gallery, and for how-to videos.   And, of course be sure to follow the Designer Craft Blog Connection post on the left to see what the other participating designers have created with Etchall®!

Those of you who follow my creative work know I tend to be a bit of a mad scientist sometimes when crafting.   When I received my Etchall® for this Designer Craft Blog Connection Hop, I immediately began scheming and dreaming up new things I wanted to try with it. First, I'm going to share my finished project, then I'll share my experiments.....

The Plaid® Martha Stewart stencils I used for these glasses are made of sturdy plastic and therefore would not bend well to mold to the shape of the wine glass.  So I traced the stencil onto Etchall® Etchmask, and used a sharp craft knife to cut out the open areas.

The finished sticker stencil was mounted to the glass and I followed the manufacturer’s instructions for applying the Etchall® - and it worked wonderfully - I was able to easily create four seaside themed wine glasses.  (*Note... I found when etching a curved surface like this, it was better to apply the cream to small areas at a time, rather than the entire image to eliminate the issue of the cream running off the curved edge on to the area of the glass you don't want etched...)

And even though the different designs would make it easy for those using the to determine which glass was there, I like to be optimistic and think that several sets might be in use at a fabulous beachside party.... causing confusion as to whose glass was whose.    My answer - quick and easy wine glass charms made from gold hoop earrings, 4 different colored Connie Crystal pearls, and some sparkling Connie Crystal accents.

And now... cue the bubbling vials and beakers of steaming green and brown goo in the laboratory....

First Experiment:

Polished marble door stop......  I am lucky to have access to some great assorted chunks of gorgeous marble and have been wanting to create something unique with a piece for a while.

I whipped out my KellyCraft Get-it-Straight™ Laser Square and lined up some Plaid® Martha Stewart alphabet stencils to spell out a favorite verse.   Applied the Etchall® and waited not so patiently for the required time.  When I removed the Etchall®, then the stencils, I discovered...... nothing.   Apparently, the manufacturers are correct in not claiming their product works on polished marble - lol......

Second Experiment:

(Yes, the inner “Beaker” in me... anybody remember him from The Muppet Show?..... persevered and had to keep on pushing the limits beyond the product’s recommended uses...)

Etched luggage tag......... I love the clear acrylic Mod Podge Acrylic shapes, especially the tags, from Plaid®.   Out came my Get-it-Straight™ Laser Square again and those same Plaid® Martha Stewart stencils..... I spelled out my name and was planning to add my phone number too and a pretty little flower design.

Guess what?  Apparently, the manufacturer was also correct in not claiming the product would etch plastic.

Was there a third experiment?  Well of course there was.   I took a sheet of rolled, dried Makin’s Clay®, added a stencil and added some Etchall® just to see what would happen.  I bet you can guess what the result was.

With all of that shared, I want to reiterate that the Etchall® cream was very easy to use, and I had good results, when I followed the manufacturer's instructions and used it for it's intended use!  I'm glad I got a chance to discover this product and I already have ideas on ways to use it for future projects! - Cindi

It is such an honor for me to be part of the ICE Resin® Special Projects Team.  I love creating with their resin and their other wonderful assortment of creative ephemera!   And I really enjoy how the resin works so well with some of other favorite products, like Makin's Clay which I used to create these tiny birds eggs for the nest. Cre8time Window Display at CHA

Busy, busy, like the bees...would definitely describe these past few weeks as I finalized preparations for the winter Craft & Hobby Association trade show in Anaheim! One of the projects was this window display for the Cre8time area on the showroom floor. My concept was to create a bright, bold, eye-catching display of a sunflower field of mixed-media flowers, and I'm happy to say that Ana Araujo and I succeeded! It was fabulous! I hand-painted the 3 backdrop panels, created 6 different patterned paper & mixed-media sunflowers, and made the Elmer's foam board picket fence, complete with crackle finish using Elmer's, and easily re-assembled thanks to Velcro! FloraCraft supplied foam for the base of the garden, as well as moss to cover our ground. Ana created fun mixed-media fabric sunflowers, recycled water bottle bees, and felt squirrels holding the "Cre8time to make the flowers" sign which she hand embroidered.

Holiday Shopping List - The Stylish Way

The countdown to the holidays is on - and for many people the real mad rush of shopping kicks in this week as we approach the infamous "Black Friday" day after Thanksgiving.    This year, I decided that instead of bringing a piece of notebook paper with my holiday shopping list - I'd create a small, purse sized notebook that I could keep my list in, tuck receipts or coupons into, etc.  I can even use it from one year to the next until it's filled.   When I whip out this list, I'm hoping this festive little book will make me stop and reflect on the true joy of giving - or at least remind me that soon enough I'll be back in my studio busily creating, which is much less stressful than shopping to me personally, when the holidays are over!

Materials:

Darice 3" x 4" notebook
Theresa Collins Noel Collection patterned papers and chipboard embellishments
Spellbinders™ Grand Calibur® & Spellbinders™ Shapeabilities® Poinsettia set
Red cardstock
JudiKins Diamond Glaze
Clearsnap ColorBox Archival Dye Cat's Eye inkpad - Red Devil
The Robin's Nest "Champagne" Dew Drops embellishments
ScraPerfect The Best Glue Ever
1/2" Gold Organza ribbon
Westcott Craft Titanium Bonded Non-Stick Scissors

Instructions:

Following manufacturer instructions, cut and emboss poinsettia using Grand Calibur® & Spellbinders™ Shapeabilities® Poinsettia set.   Apply thin coat of JudiKins Diamond Glaze to each layer of petals before assembling flower.

Determine how you'd like to layer the papers for cover and back of book.  The assortment of designs in the Theresa Collins Noel Collection all coordinate well so the hardest part is deciding which ones you want to use from the great assortment... Ink edges of all pieces with Clearsnap Red Devil inkpad.   Mount with Best Glue Ever.  Let dry.

Dovetail cut one end of gold organza ribbon, mount to bottom front of book, approximatley 1/2" from bottom edge, with dovetail extending slightly off edge.  Wrap around to back of book and mount.

Mount chipboard "GIFTS" embellishment over gold ribbon.

Arrange poinsettia in bottom left front corner of book.  Mount, extending off book, and remove outer petals.

Use JudiKins Diamond Glaze to mount gold Dew Drops embellishments as center of poinsettia, and layer over "GIFTS" chipboard embellishment.  Let dry.

Happy shopping and may you all take a moment to reflect on the joy of giving this season! - Cindi

Monster Mash with Rit Liquid Dye

You can find the instructions for the Halloween party favors I designed last year on the Rit Dye website.  This year I made something similar, but with a few twists.  Frankenstein's mouth is embroidered, and his neck bolts are made from straws painted silver.  I also used the same Sizzix Eileen Hull Scoreboards XL Die, and twine from The Twinery.  Thought I'd share those with you too!

Rit Liquid Dye is used to create custom-colored, textured cardstock for this Monster Mash invitation and treat cup.  A Sizzix Scoreboards vase die  is used to make a whimsical Frankenstein treat cup and for the face focal image on the invitation.  Ransom note style lettering cut from magazine spells out the key text.   A hand stitched mouth, silver drinking straw bolts, and fringed hair add to his monsterly appeal.

Some New Bling with Makin's Clay

I thought I'd share a pendant and earring set I made to wear at ARTOLOGY this past weekend in New Jersey.   A variety of different beads, all made with black Makin's Clay® , were used along with a few green glass beads for accents.   The dragonfly pendant was created with Makin's Clay® in a fabulous Paula Radke dragonfly mold from Art Clay World.   The wings of the dragonfly, and some of the black clay beads, were given a little sparkle with Clearsnap's Smooch GLITZ™.    The diversity of options when designing with Makin's Clay® is one of the reasons it's one of my favorite mediums.
